Tips for making moving easier and more organized

Moving to a new home, even if it’s just down the street, is super-ultra stressful. However, there are plenty of ways to make this daunting task more fun and less taxing.

(Related: Making a Move Less Work and More Organized)

The biggest issue usually comes with the feelings of overwhelm that tend to occur when its time to start packing and then when just a couple of weeks (or even days) later when you have to unpack everything.

Essentially, you want to focus on relieving the overwhelming feelings that end up leading to stress and anxiety. The key is to start the moving process as early as possible.

Get into the moving mindset when you decide to list your home.

This means the moment you decide to list (before you actually do it), start a plan. Decide where you need to de-clutter. This is the biggest issue with not only packing but with selling your home. Your home will sell 80% faster and for a higher price if it is de-cluttered, organized and nicely decorated (essentially a staged home).

The basic rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you have not used in the last 6 months. There are some things this won’t apply to but for 90% of your stuff you can toss it or donate it if you haven’t used it in the last 6 months. The other thing to keep in mind here is if you don’t love it, lose it. When we remove the things from our lives that we don’t love and aren’t positively contributing to our desired lifestyle we make room for better things to come our way.

Plus the less clutter and old things you have (that you don’t use) the easier it is to pack!

Once your home is under contract, its time to start packing!

You will have around 30 days until your home closes so the earlier you start the easier the process will be and the less overwhelmed you will feel. Create a checklist of what you need to get done every week until your home closes. (Click Here for the one I created specifically for moving).

If you give yourself a full 30 days to pack, clean and get things moved it will go so much smoother!

That being said here are a few little tips to make the packing less daunting:

1. Take it in bite-size pieces

This is the exact reason I recommend giving yourself ample time to pack and why having a checklist is oh-so important! That way each day you do a little something and it totally takes the overwhelm of having to do EVERYTHING in just a few days.

2. Start by packing things you won’t need in the next 30 days

Each day you will notice more and more little things you could probably do without until you move. This also helps weigh in on if its something you really need to keep or if you can just toss it/donate it.

3. Go Room by Room

Packing within specific rooms of the house and then labeling your boxes with what it is and where it goes will make a HUGE difference in the unpacking process. For instance if you are packing in the kitchen only use that box for kitchen items. If it’s dishes label it “Dishes” and “Kitchen”. This also makes life easy for your movers because they will know exactly where to put your boxes in the new home!

4. When in doubt hire a Professional!

I highly recommend hiring a Professional Organizer to help you with the packing/unpacking process. Especially if you have a tight work schedule, young children you are running after or if moving just stresses you out to the max. The price you pay an organizer to help you is well worth a rested mind that everything is taken care of and you don’t have to worry about it.

5. Use clear plastic bins

Using clear plastic bins provides a few advantages.  They make everything really easy to see, they offer more durability and support for fragile items and they usually have handles! Consider adding a few of these into the mix for certain items you will need right away once you get to your new home.

6. Pack a Moving Day Kit!

I love making kits for things! But this one is totally essential. Pack a bag or bin with cleaning supplies, T.P., Light Bulbs, Toiletries, change of clothes, etc. Take this over to the new house before your movers get there so you can get the home cleaned up and ready for furniture. Plus you’ll already have your necessary items ready and at your fingertips when it comes to taking a shower and getting ready for your first night in your new home!
